Configuring Your GMX Outlook Connection
Are you ready to make a GMX Outlook 2010 connection? GMX is a free, respected international email system, and an ideal partner for Outlook. Outlook 2010 can recognize and configure itself to work with your GMX eMail account. So let’s get to work and configure Outlook for GMX access.
NOTE: A link for making a GMX Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007 connection is at the end of this article
On this page, I’ll walk you through the process of configuring an IMAP (link opens in new window) GMX Outlook connection. With a GMX IMAP setup, you can use either Outlook or your web browser with your GMX account. Any changes you make get synchronized between them.
Life is easier when you can handle your GMX email in Outlook with all the rest of your messages. That will save you time and hassles. It also eliminates the embarrassing problem of missing a message because you failed to check one of your myriad email accounts.
Making an IMAP connection between GMX Mail and Outlook is definitely the way to go. But there are a couple of things to be aware of when making this kind of connection. Outlook will have a separate set of folders for your GMX messsages. (It does the same for any account that uses IMAP.) This isn’t a problem. You just need to remember that your GMX mail will show up in these folders, not your regular Outlook Inbox.
Also, some Outlook features work slightly differently with IMAP accounts. For example, IMAP doesn’t support Outlook-style Categories. So you won’t be able to assign categories to messages in the GMX folders. Still, these incompatibilities are a small price to pay for connecting Outlook and GMX.
Making a GMX Outlook 2010 Connection
Let’s get started. This will only take a few minutes.
NOTE: These instructions assume you already have a GMX Mail account. If not, you need to sign up for one of those first (remember, they are free). The following link opens a new window and takes you to the GMX mail home page so you can sign up for an account. Once you are done creating your account, close that window to come back here.
- In Outlook 2010, click the File tab on the Ribbon. In the “File” menu that appears, click Info to display the “Account Information” screen shown below.
- Click Add Account to open the “Add New Account” page of the “Auto Account Setup” wizard.
- Select the E-Mail Account option, then enter your account information (the Name you want to use with GMX mail, your full GMX email address and password) on this screen, then click Next. This tells Outlook to try to configure itself automatically. This will probably take several minutes, during which time the screen will look something like the one below.
- Once the wizard establishes a successful GMX to Outlook 2010 connection, it displays the congratulations screen shown below.
With the new account set up, Outlook includes a new folder in the Navigation Pane that corresponds to your GMX mailbox folders. That’s all there is to setting up a GMX Outlook connection using the automatic setup process.
Now that you have a working GMX Outlook connection, follow one of the links below to continue configuring Outlook email.
