POP3 stands for Post Office Protocol 3. It is a set of rules that an email program uses to communicate with an email server. For example, Yahoo uses POP3 to communicate with email programs like Outlook 2010.

While POP3 is reliable and well supported, it is also relatively simple. All it really allows a program to do is copy messages out of the mail server Inbox, and either leave the message on the email server or delete it. With more sophisticated protocols like IMAP, the email program can access multiple folders on the server and make sure that those folders are synchronized between the email program and the server.

If you want to use an email server that only offers POP3 with Outlook, then your best bet is to work with all your mail through Outlook and Outlook Web Access (OWA).
